Side Table, 19th century, private collection
This little side table had many damages. The stand was broken and two of the feet were completely unstable. Major areas of the veneered surface were lifting. The wooden carcass had shrunken and the dovetail at the corner joints broke through the veneer making the veneer in these areas prone to rip off. Another issue was that the varnish was almost all gone.
The conservation and restoration included reinstating the stability of the stand, re-attaching all loose areas of veneer by injecting glue under the surface, compensating for losses with new veneer or a filler material, in-painting all replacements and fills and varnishing the entire surface of the side table.
